Many of the symptoms of Autism (Also referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder/ASD) are often mistaken as a diagnosis of different conditions. For e.g., cough is a symptom, whereas Bronchitis is a diagnosis. It is important to not get hung up with the diagnosis of a symptom. Rather, it is more effective to try and understand the cause of these symptoms.

Autism co-morbidities are symptoms of a very complex biologically determined behavior disorder called Autism.

Parents must focus on addressing the core problem of Autism rather than focusing on each symptom individually.

The core problem of Autism is social communication. These challenges in the child need to be addressed first and foremost. The knowledge of why a child behaves the way he/she does, and how a child deals with anxiety/mood dysfunction are pressing issues to address in a child with Autism. Working towards making the child a socially communicative being so he/she would have better quality of life is the most effective approach to managing the condition. The child may continue to have Autism but understanding the core problem in Autism and managing it will allow them to be far more independent and successful as any other child.
