इकोलेलिया दूसरों द्वारा कहे गए शब्दों और वाक्यांशों को दोहराना (गूंज) है। यह तीन साल की उम्र तक भाषा को समझने और सीखने की प्रक्रिया का एक स्वाभाविक हिस्सा है। तीन साल की उम्र के बाद इकोलेलिया एक अन्य स्थिति का संकेत हो सकता है जैसे विकास में देरी, भाषा को सीखने में देरी, ऑटिज्म, टौरेटे सिंड्रोम, बौद्धिक अक्षमता आदि।

इकोलेलिया ऑटिज्म वाले बच्चों में बहुत आम है और ये कई तरह से काम करता है। यह संवाद के तरीके के रूप में, आत्म-उत्तेजना के रूप में, शांत करने वाले तंत्र या खुशी का एहसास करने के उपायों के रूप में हो सकता है।

इकोलेलिया इंटरैक्टिव (संवादात्मक) और नॉन-इंटरैक्टिव (गैर-संवादात्मक) हो सकता है। इंटरैक्टिव इकोलेलिया में, बच्चे याद किए गए शब्दों और वाक्यांशों को दोहराकर दूसरे व्यक्ति के साथ संवाद करने की कोशिश कर रहे होते है। नॉन-इंटरैक्टिव इकोलेलिया में, बच्चे किसी और से बात करने की कोशिश नहीं कर रहे होतें हैं। वे किसी विचार का अभ्यास करने के लिए या आत्म-उत्तेजना या शांत करने वाले तंत्र के रूप में शब्दों या वाक्यांशों को दोहरा रहे होंगे।

इकोलेलिया तत्काल हो सकता है, जहां ये किसी व्यक्ति को बोलते हुए सुनने के तुरंत बाद होता है।इकोलेलिया देरी से भी होता है, जहां ये किसी व्यक्ति के बोलने के घंटों, दिनों या हफ्तों बाद होता है।

स्पीच थेरेपी, ऑक्यूपेशनल थेरेपी और बिहेवियरल थेरेपी की मदद से बच्चे में कार्यात्मक संचार बनाने के लिए इकोलेलिया का इस्तेमाल किया जा सकता है।

ऑटिज्म वाले बच्चों में इकोलेलिया को दबाया नहीं जाना चाहिए क्योंकि यह ऑटिज्म वाले कई बच्चों के लिए संचार का शुरुआती साधन है और उन्हें अधिक बेहतर संचार कौशल सिखाने के लिए इसका इस्तेमाल किया जा सकता है।

In this video Special Educator & Auditory Verbal Therapist (AVT), Ms Kim Chadda talks Role of Auditory Verbal Therapy. She also talks about the importance of follow-ups & setting up habilitation (a process that will help the equipment fit better & suit the needs of the child) goals after a child with hearing loss is fitted with either a hearing-aid/cochlear implant. Soon after the fitting of the hearing aid/implant habilitation teaches the child to ‘learn’ to listen, which is enhanced by the reinforcement of good listening & language practices at home through active parent involvement. It is important to follow up regularly on the habilitation goals after fitting a hearing aid/implant to the child.
