Key Takeaways:

  1. Communication is key—supporting your child’s communication skills should be a top priority.
  2. Both verbal and non-verbal communication are valid and important forms of expression.
  3. Consistent engagement at home greatly supports your child’s communication development.
  4. Parents play a central role—intervention should not be limited to school or therapy sessions.
  5. Holistic development begins at home, where everyday interactions become learning opportunities.

This article is based on a video on the importance of building communication skills in your child. In our Rubaroo knowledge sharing series, watch Ms. Lavanya, a parent to a young adult on the spectrum, talk about her journey with her son Kedar.

Working on Communication

Many children on the autism spectrum communicate differently. It may be through gestures, speech or any other form of expression like drawing in the case of Kedar.

Lavanya stresses that the key goal for any parent of a young child should be the development of their communication skills. It is important to ensure that your child continuously engages in communication in whatever way possible.

Communication is not always limited to speech. It may be in varied forms such as art, pictures, non-verbal gestures or even sign language. It is important to understand and identify a mode of communication that suits your child and encourage communication through it.

This will help them communicate their needs, their fears and frustration to you, where you can help them cope with it.

Role play

Another way to encourage communication is through role play or enacting scenes that helps the child understand ways to respond to certain situations.

This can also be used to narrate stories to the children in a way the children find it easier to relate and remember.

Through this video, Ms. Lavanya emphasises on the importance of building communication skills in your child.

Remember, the main intervention happens at home, so please make sure the learning process for your child is not restricted to teachings gathered at school or the therapy centre. Home intervention is equally essential for your child for his/her holistic development and must not be ignored.
