Key Takeaways:

We are currently working on the key takeaways for this article. They will be available soon.

Once a diagnosis is handed out to a family of a child’s developmental disability, one of the few first responses will naturally tend to lean towards denial. However, it is essential to validate the feelings of non-acceptance to move past the denial phase onto the stage of acceptance of the child’s condition. Clinical Psychologist and Dyslexia Therapist, Afshan Jabeen urges parents to remember & acknowledge that no child born with a disability nor the parents are responsible for the onset of any disability. The sooner families seek help to understand their child’s diagnosis the sooner they can intervene to bring timely help to the child. Informed and empowered parents provide the best support for their child. Hence, do not hesitate to seek help from your extended family, medical community and peer groups.
