Would a parent who is autistic have a higher chance of having a child with autism?

TwinStudies_Autism_ASD_genes_DNAtesting_GeneticRisk_DevelopmentalDisability

35-40% of mothers who raise children with Autism reflect on the challenges their children face and relate to them as something they underwent in their childhood. This introduces the scope of self-diagnosis among parents to be individuals with Autism or Asperger’s. It is quite common for an Autistic individual to be successful and go onto become parents. However, parents who have Autism increase their chance of having a child with Autism as well.

Genetic risk of Autism in the family – When should I be worried?

TwinStudies_Autism_ASD_genes_DNAtesting_Karyotyping

Developmental disabilities can be of different nature. If one of the family members has a primary mental retardation syndrome with a small brain, in addition to having epilepsy, cerebral palsy or any brain injury, then these situations have no bearings on the genetics of Autism. These conditions mentioned above have occurred independently with no bearings on Autism. However, if a member on the family tree showed developmental regression early on, then whether this individual has a contributory effect on the genetics of Autism in one of the offspring remains uncertain. Unless research identifies a clear cut gene defect and if both individuals (the Ancestor and the offspring) had been carriers, we may not conclusively associate a hereditary component to the cause of Autism.
