We not only conduct educational activities for children under difficult circumstances and street children through non-formal education but also train unskilled workers for their skill development and livelihood generation. Started in 2006, Sambhav has impacted close to 2000 special children and their families. Sambhav Foundation works with LabourNet Services India Private Limited, for implementing its vocational training programs to enhance livelihood opportunities for the people working in the informal sector. About Saadhya Programme Project Saadhya, is aimed at enabling children with mental disabilities lead a sustainable life through education and skill development. By addressing the problems of children from vulnerable background and socially marginalized sections, this self-enrichment program strives to empower them by providing and enhancing skills to cope up with the current needs and requirements. Sambhav currently caters to 80 individuals aged between 5 – 25 years. These individuals are inflicted by medical conditions such as Down’s syndrome, Dyslexia, Psycho motor disorder, Microcephaly, Epilepsy, Speech and language disorder, ADHD, Autism, to name a few. - Through early intervention (for children with developmental age below 5 yrs) and special education programs (5+ years of developmental age) for those children who are identified as having delayed development and growth progress, special educators at Sambhav endeavour to train them to cope up with day-to-day activities and bring them into mainstream life. - Vocational training in data entry operations, creating handicraft items, tailoring operation, making phenyl and liquid dishwasher solutions, making chocolate, making candle etc. is presently underway for inculcating life skills among these children. - It also conducts after school remedial intervention programme for school going children with learning difficulties. - Training and guidance is provided to the parents and caregivers of such children for them to cope up with the special demands of their specially abled child. - Nutritious snacks and midday meal is served to further enhance their development. We have a team of dedicated teachers, special educators, psychologists, speech therapists, physiotherapists, administration staff, working together to achieve our mission. How We Do Early Intervention Early intervention process starts from understanding the Case history of the child by the psychologist, right from conception, track milestone, additional disabilities ex. Speech / hearing/ seizure. Family history and the medication details are also captured. Disability certificate from any government recognized institution is essential. Assessment is based on Carolina Curriculum for the children with special needs. The curriculum focuses on the developmental age of a child starting from 0 till 60 months, irrespective of chronological age. Based on the assessment, children will be grouped with similar developmental age. Overall there are 6 domains for the holistic development of the child. 41 children are currently enrolled in the program. After assessment, we prepare goal sheets for the children. Goals are also shared with the parent to have an equal responsibility, these goals are taken up for a quarter. Intervention is more of activity and lot of play materials are used. Every day during post lunch session, we cover co-curricular activities such as art, craft, indoor games, painting, music, dance & outdoor visit to improve social skills among the children. For behavior modification, one to one sessions are in practice with the psychologist. In addition, we provide speech therapy and physiotherapy for the children in need. Once the child has achieved the developmental age level of 5 years, we guide them towards either mainstream, NIOS or vocational training. 2 children were mainstreamed this academic year. National Institute of Open Schooling We coach students for the 10th certificate through NIOS and support them in applying and taking up the exams. There is a preparation stage of pre-NIOS where basic language skills, number concepts, General knowledge and EVS are taught. Currently, we coach in the following NIOS subjects: English, Painting, Data Entry, Home Science, Business Studies and Kannada. 3 students completed their 10th through NIOS last academic year. Vocational training Assessment is based on NIMH index for setting goals and SFB or BKT test is conducted for IQ. We recommend ENT and Neurologist for consultation along with a background verification by social worker. Child will be observed for around a month and the IEP is set along with the parent. Currently, we have 30 students under this group. Quarterly or half yearly report will be discussed mutually. Based on the student’s ability and parents’interests, children are grouped into: Pre-Vocational: Here, the prerequisites for vocational training are taught such as concepts of cutting, pasting, sorting, counting, computer basics, etc. This section also caters to adolescents/adults who have severe disability and are still not self independent. They are helped with their personal skills like eating, grooming, etc. In addition, we provide speech therapy and physiotherapy for the children in need. Sheltered workshop: Trainers guide the children and train them step by step to prepare various products like herbal phenyl, biodegradable cleaning material, diyas, paper covers & bags, bead jewellery, jute bags, aprons, compost, etc. We display the products in our centre and also visit stalls along with the children, to spread awareness and create inclusiveness in the community. The aim in the long run is to setup entrepreneurial ventures with the support of parents.
