What age-related challenges will my child with Cerebral Palsy(CP) face over the years?

A child with Cerebral Palsy(CP) in the first year of life may present delay in motor milestones, such as –

  • inability to sit properly
  • inability to crawl adequately
  • inability to pull up and stand and walk by themselves

A child with CP between 1-2 years

  • may appear uncoordinated
  • may walk with a narrow base gait
  • wait on their toes or stumble easily

A child with CP between 3-4years of age

  • may have difficulty climbing
  • kicking a ball
  • throwing a ball

A child with CP between 6-8years

  • may have trouble with fine motor coordination
  • have difficulty to turn quickly
  • may stumble and fall

A child with CP between 10-12years of age

  • may have impaired cognitive function
  • may present learning delays
  • have problems with attention

A lot of the challenges faced by children with CP can be effectively controlled when addressed by adequate therapy and family attention.

A child with Cerebral Palsy (CP) may have a relatively small head circumference. A child with CP may have significant cognitive impairment. A child with CP can have problems focusing on things and have issues with attention, focus or planning (executive functioning).
