Key Takeaways:

This third video in a series of videos offering information about the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), talks about the concessions and accommodation offered.

Prachi Puranik, a parent advocate and a special educator talks about offers information on the accommodations that can be availed by students with disabilities.

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) offers different accommodations and exemptions for students with disabilities. To avail these accommodations, students must provide a disability certificate as issued by a recognised authority.

The different provisions are:

  1. Amanuensis or Scribe: This facility is provided with students with disabilities that find it difficult to write their examinations. In such cases, the use of a scribe can be helpful.
  2. Seating arrangements: For students with disabilities, separate seating can be provided for. This can ensure that students with sensory sensitivities, can take their examinations in a noise free and comfortable environment.
  3. Use of technological/ assistive devices: Students with disabilities can be allowed to use assistive aids such as (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) AACs or a laptop, while taking an examination.
  4. Extra time: Depending upon the disability, the student may be allowed additional time while answering the examination.

Apart from these accommodations, other provisions include:

Help to read the question paper,

Exemption for grammatical errors while correction of the examination papers.

These exemptions can be utilised by providing the student’s disability certificate and working with the study centre closely.

Through these concessions NIOS is offering an opportunity for students with disabilities to pursue education, while creating an inclusive environment.
