Key Takeaways:

Toilet training your child with Autism

In the informational video, Triveni Goswami, a parent to a 13 year old on the spectrum, shares some important tips on toilet training your child. Triveni is a special educator, a psychologist and an expressive art therapist.

Here she shares some tips that she’s found useful in her journey with her son.

Some key highlights from the video on tips to toilet train are:

Patience is a virtue:

“It takes 3 months to form a new habit”, says Triveni, as she highlights the importance of being patient when toilet training your child. According to her, it may take anywhere between a few weeks to a couple of months.

Not losing hope but working with your child consistently is the only way to achieve this important life skill.

Be consistent:

All children develop and learn new skills at different pace.

One of the most important tips is to be consistent. A child cannot be toilet trained in a day. What helps is developing strategies suited for your child and following through consistently. Irrespective of any accidents that might take place while training, it is essential to carry on. Giving the child fluids at regular intervals, taking the child to the toilet at fixed times (for instance, every half hour) are some steps that can be taken to help the child during toilet training.

Recognise and Reward:

It is important to acknowledge the child’s efforts each time he uses the toilet.

Every time the child uses the toilet to successfully pee or poop, parents can use positive reinforcement to encourage the child.

Accidents may happen!

As in any process, accidents are bound to happen.

Let it not discourage you from continuing training. Accidents may take place occasionally if the child is distracted and does not go to the toilet on time

However, sometimes there may be an underlying medical condition that may result in poor bladder control. It is important to identify and address any such problems.
Toilet training is one of the most important life skills that a child should learn. It is also a lengthy process but remember once a child develops this skill, “they learn it for life!”
