Over the years, every child picks up different ways of expressing their needs, through crying, laughing, indicating what they need. They also learn &#8216;gestures&#8217; and words from their environment, to describe different things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But often, we tend to focus on developing the &#8216;verbal&#8217; skills, while the non-verbal communication slowly fades. At times, individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities may require additional support in verbal communication. Picture schedules can serve as valuable tools to facilitate communication, especially when verbal expression remains challenging. The use of Picture communication also brings an element of fun to the learning process, and helps reduce the anxiety associated with communication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Modes of using Picture Communication:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Picture schedule: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This involves using pictures to create a sequence of the steps involved in an activity or a series of all the tasks set for the day. Here are some samples:<\/span><b><\/b><b><\/b><b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b><a style=\"font-weight: 500;\" href=\"https:\/\/nayi-disha.org\/article\/therapies-adls\/communication-cards\/\"><b><b style=\"color: #666666;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-89019 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/d3n2v804uranu1.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Screenshot-2023-12-23-102520-236x300.png\" alt=\"Screenshot-2023-12-23-102520-236x300\" width=\"155\" height=\"197\" \/><\/b><\/b><\/a><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/nayi-disha.org\/article\/therapies-adls\/daily-visual-schedules\/\"><b>Daily schedules(Morning Routine, Night Routine, Toileting, Brushing and Bathing)<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nayi-disha.org\/article\/therapies-adls\/communication-cards\/\"><b>Communication cards( Request, Instructions and Feeling cards)<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nayi-disha.org\/article\/therapies-adls\/emergency-cards\/\"><b>Emergency cards(Emergency needs)<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nayi-disha.org\/article\/therapies-adls\/vocabulary-cards\/\"><b>Vocabulary cards: People, Everyday needs, Food items, Games, Body parts, Basic colours, Basic shape, Stationary items, Household items, Animals, Vehicles and Places to visit.<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nayi-disha.org\/article\/therapies-adls\/functional-activity-cards\/\"><b>Functional activity cards: Games and Activity choices.<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-89020 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/d3n2v804uranu1.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Screenshot-2023-12-23-102706-219x300.png\" alt=\"Screenshot-2023-12-23-102706-219x300\" width=\"143\" height=\"196\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2.\u2018<b>Now, next and then\u2019 boards:<\/b> Parents can list activities by using visual pictures, or by simply drawing things on the board, and indicating the time required for each activity. For example, Ramu is playing with the cars, but soon it\u2019s time for dinner. On the \u2018Now\u2019 section, draw or use a visual for the car and on the \u2018Next\u2019 draw a dinner plate and knife and fork. Top tip \u2013 If the dinner plate alone is not motivating enough, try drawing the part of the food you know your child likes, i.e. sabzi. Sign language<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: This includes the use of sign language to communicate words. Some children find it easier to communicate non-verbally, through gestures and signs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4. Assistive technologies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Picture communication can also be used through apps like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jellow.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jellow <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u0914\u0930 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avazapp.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Awaaz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has a list of visuals that can be used for communication.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-89021 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d3n2v804uranu1.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Screenshot-2023-12-23-103034-300x198.png\" alt=\"Screenshot-2023-12-23-103034-300x198\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reinforcing healthy behaviours:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes visuals have been used to offer rewards for a task being completed. A reward is used to encourage the child to complete the task.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the \u2018now\u2019 section might be sorting shapes and the \u2018next\u2019 section offers a reward &#8211; the light-up toy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, the visuals are used as an encouragement for the child to complete the task. This means that we need to get creative and consider whether the activity is offering the following:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it fun?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it adapted for their level of development?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it visually engaging?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it an irresistible invitation to play? Is it motivating?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Will using Picture Communication affect my child\u2019s speech development?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the primary concerns of parents while using Picture Communication is that the child may regress in \u2018speech\u2019 development or \u2018verbal\u2019 development. While it is good to encourage your child to learn new words and develop their vocabulary, what is more important is that they learn to communicate in whatever form possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We may have encountered multiple instances when we fail to find the right word in a sentence, leaving us feeling twitchy at the tip of our tongue. Imagine the frustration of a child trying their entire lifetime to find the right way to express themselves.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please keep in mind that the use of visuals enables your child to communicate better and reduce the frustration that comes from not being able to express themselves.
