Instead of insisting that a child sit through an activity, it is far more effective to generate intrinsic motivation through connection, curiosity, and respect.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Observe what naturally draws the child\u2019s attention and use these interests as entry points for learning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offer choices rather than commands to create a sense of autonomy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep activities flexible and adaptable to the child\u2019s energy levels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use play-based approaches that invite participation instead of enforcing compliance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrate small moments of engagement to build confidence and enthusiasm.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember: a child\u2019s need for breaks or downtime does not indicate unwillingness or inability to learn.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identifying a child\u2019s interests and using them to build skills strengthens not only cognition but also self-esteem. When a child feels seen and understood, their engagement becomes joyful and meaningful.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Recognising and affirming Autism in children<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A child may be born with autism, the cause of which is beyond anybody\u2019s understanding or control. What <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within our control is how we perceive children with autism and how we choose to support them. Early identification can pave the way for informed support, but awareness must always walk hand in hand with acceptance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Neuroaffirming understanding of Autism<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autism is not a deficit to be fixed but a different way of experiencing the world. Autistic children express emotions, creativity, and intelligence in beautifully diverse ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plays with toys in ingenious and creative ways<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communicates in unexpected ways \u2013 talking is not the only way to &#8220;speak&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sees beauty in details others may overlook<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intense interests bring intense joy and focus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensory processing differences are not personality defects<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thriving on routine is okay \u2013 no need to pathologise<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world can feel loud and overwhelming for autistic individuals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The need for more downtime does not equal disinterest<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May need additional support to understand dangerous situations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With love, guidance, and respectful teaching, children with autism thrive uniquely<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your inability to understand a child\u2019s behaviour as communication is not their fault. Behaviour is language, and it deserves curiosity instead of judgement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autism acceptance ensures that children with autism are recognised for who they are, not who society expects them to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ms. Lei Wiley-Mydske, of the <a href=\"https:\/\/neurodiversitylibrary.org\/\">neurodiversity library<\/a>, created this infographic to reflect on the early signs of autism. For a truly inclusive society, it is essential to celebrate neurological diversity.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Value each child\u2019s strengths<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encourage self-advocacy skills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promote respectful communication<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid labels that reduce identity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use language that affirms (\u201cchild with autism\u201d not \u201cautistic child\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognise that support needs may vary<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let us celebrate children with autism for the wonderful individuals they are.
