Understanding the importance of physiotherapy in children with delayed development

motordelay_developmentaldisabilities_DevelopmentalDelay_Physiotherapy

The development of motor skills in your child is the foundation for both his/her physical and cognitive development. One of several areas affected in many forms of developmental delays is the inability to achieve motor milestones as predicted typically. However, the observation of gaps in motor ability must not be looked upon as a deficit your child has to live with for life. There are tools and means to help push your child’s motor milestones up the growth curve and an attempt can be made to achieve some of these missed milestones eventually. Hence, early intervention through physiotherapy must be sort out to fill gaps in motor milestone development as early as possible. This intervention will be reflected as visible changes in your child’s functional skills as they grow older.

The sooner you seek help, the sooner you will see changes in your child, and the longer those effects would last in his/her life.

Need for Early intervention

Early intervention is an umbrella term for a number of specialized therapies that will go a long way in helping your child overcome some challenges he/she maybe facing during the early years of development.

Many developmental delays cannot be reversed, but early intervention has proven to be very effective in helping your child succeed in both school and home, despite being born with developmental challenges. You as a parent form an integral part of the team of therapists that constitute this circle of support for your child. The therapists that constitute an early intervention team together ensure your child is able to engage with his/her surroundings effectively, and try to achieve goals to improve his/her quality of life. The success of early intervention is ensured through coordinated team work among all the therapists involved and the family.
