Exercises, stretching and movement of all kinds is very effective for reducing muscle tightening in individuals with spastic Cerebral Palsy (CP). Physical therapy may not be very useful in individuals with hypotonic CP where the muscle tone is weak. Ask your physical therapist to teach you ways to improve posture in the child.

Ensure the child gets adequate movement to prevent permanent tightening of tendons. Once the tendons are very tight, physical therapy will no longer be effective, and a tendon release surgery would be advisable. If the child is 12-15 years old and already has muscle atrophy in the joints with joint deformation, in such cases tendon release surgery will have little effect. If the physical therapist is no longer able to bring in movement in the child’s limbs, then consider meeting an Orthopedist for discussion of surgical options.
