Brain injury and Cerebral Palsy risk – is there a connection?

Injury to the infant’s brain can occur can be during later part of pregnancy, during labor or during delivery of the infant.

1/5th of the births of individuals with CP can be attributed to brain injury during birth.

4/5th of births of individuals with CP can be due to prenatal factors, neuro-developmental or genetic causes.

An infant with brain injury can project some of the following symptoms in response to injury –

  • Apathy (lack of interest)
  • Does not cry
  • Inadequate limb movement
  • Inability to breathe properly
  • Inability to pass urine
  • Depressed heart function
  • Decreased blood pressure
  • Multi-organ failure
