Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to modes of communication that support verbally-impaired individual who seek non verbal means to communicate with people in their surroundings.

We all seek to interact and express ourselves with people around us. Most of us do so effortlessly through words and language i.e. verbal communication. Verbally-impaired individuals may use text and pictorial representations in order to help them exercise their rights and need to express themselves. This mode of communication refers to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). An AAC device thus becomes the “voice” of the child. Therefore it must reflect the words, concepts and language that are commonly encountered in a child’s everyday life.
