Dr.Padma speaks about the role of Behaviour therapy as the main tool to help with Autism management and care. Autism is a developmental brain disorder that impacts social and communication skills in the child. Hence, its management must be addressed from a behavior modification point of view.
Some commonly discussed ways of behaviour modification include the following, which are briefly discussed by Dr.Padma Palvai in the audio series above.
- Applied Behaviour Analysis(ABA) is an evidence-based approach to behavior management in Autism. ABA therapy is most effective for Autism care when started as early as possible. The key to the success of ABA therapy also heavily relies on the intensity and consistency of the therapy routine.
- Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication-handicapped Children (TEACCH) is a structured teaching methodology that focuses on adapting the learning environment by incorporating visual cues to help the child with his/her activities. It is a good well-established evidence based practice designed to help children who face communication difficulties.
- Early Start Denver Model is therapy methodology that can be used as early as 12-48months of age, which can be started even before a firm diagnosis of Autism is established. It’s principles are drawn from Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) taking into account the early developmental age of the child in therapy.
- Floortime intervention program is a teaching methodology for children with Autism, that is incorporated while engaging the child in play on the floor. It is a teaching tool to help interact and engage with the child.
