Lekhadeep is a Professional Education-Training-cum-Rehabilitation Centre for Mentally Retarded Children, started in 1994 by Mr. Rao. Their philosophy is to improve quality of life of every person with intellectual disability, equal to other members of society; they should live with self-reliance, self-confidence and self-esteem - to the optimum extent possible. It is a vocational center and individuals above 15 years of age are taught vocational activities here. There are about 74 students currently, the majority being boys. The students are given a monthly stipend ranging from Rs. 300 to 1000, based on their skills and contributions. The main skills taught are file cutting, sticking, book making, and making Atta for roti. Lekhadeep gets continuous orders from Government office for files and books, which takes care of marketing and selling of the products made by the students. The centre has a playground, wheel-chair friendly bathrooms and various workshop equipment for the vocational unit. Special educators and a psychologist are associated with the centre.
Lekhadeep founder, Mr. Rao, a parent is also the president of Parivaar chapter for Telangana.
